wis|te|ri|a «wihs TIHR ee uh», noun.
a climbing shrub with large, drooping clusters of showy, purple, blue, or white flowers, especially the Chinese wisteria and the Japanese wisteria, species often grown to cover verandas and walls. Wisteria belongs to the pea family.
[American English < New Latin Wistaria the genus name < Caspar Wistar, 1761-1818, an American anatomist]
Usage Although wistaria accords better with the name Wistar, wisteria is both the earlier and the more common form.
